CONFLICTS & DISASTERS

Save lives and livelihood

An emergency can strike at any time, overwhelming the most vulnerable people and leaving them with nothing.

St.Ritah Women Development Association also looks to the future, investing in its emergency preparedness and response skills to face emergencies like floods or droughts. It is energetically focused on disaster risk reduction – which means taking steps to lessen the harm done by repeated natural disasters in the same country or area.

St.Ritah Women Development Association also forges dialogue to prevent the conflicts which cause suffering and loss and works to transform active conflicts into peaceful settlements.

How St.Ritah Women Development Association works in Conflicts and Disasters

St.Ritah Women Development Association has a permanent presence in the disaster prone areas in western Uganda. Because it is already there on the ground, St.Ritah Women Development Association acts quickly and effectively to provide food and shelter, clean water and sanitation. St.Ritah Women Development Association has the networks and partnerships already in place to offer medical help and the comfort of counseling to the bereaved and bereft.

St.Ritah Women Development Association teams have local knowledge and expertise, often built up over decades. Emergencies are becoming more frequent, often caused by the extreme weather brought by climate change. People are relentlessly stripped of their assets and are pushed deeper into poverty. So, as well as responding to their plight, St.Ritah Women Development Association believes in looking forward, building stronger, better prepared and more resilient communities. We help them with drought resistant seeds, flood defenses and stronger homes, which can withstand typhoons.

As with natural disasters, it is sometimes possible to see that an emergency caused by humans lies ahead. Caritas invests as early as possible in conflict resolution and peace building.

No more will violence be heard in your land, despoiling or breakdown within your boundaries. – (Isaiah 60:18)
